We don’t always get two nights at the Opry but when we do, it’s always fun. We enjoy getting to see so many old friends and make new ones. On Thursday, April 4th, it was Classic Opry night with my good buddy, Larry Gatlin hosting. Larry’s also from Texas and we go way back in the music industry together so I enjoy his sense of humor and we play it up onstage. Besides being a legendary singer, the songs he’s written have set the bar high for the songwriters coming up. I’ve recorded several of his songs including “Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall” and “Help Me”.
Also on Thursday, we got to meet the incredible group, Sister Sadie. The young ladies nailed the classic songs they sang and also showed what terrific musicians they are.
It was a pleasure to talk to another amazing singer/songwriter, Jim Lauderdale. His songs have been recorded by big names like Vince Gill, George Jones, George Strait and so many more.
On Friday, April 5th, it was a regular Opry show and our dressing room was right next to Vince Gill’s so of course, we visited with that icon. Vince has 18 CMA Awards which includes 2 for Entertainer of the Year and he’s got at least 22 Grammy Awards (More than any other male country artist). He’s one of country music’s greatest songwriters and as if that wasn’t enough, he has a one handicap in golf and he’s now a member of that little rock group you may have heard of, The Eagles. All that aside, he’s possibly the nicest man you’ll ever meet. So humble and kind.
